Warwick Newbury
Chairman

Warwick Newbury held the position of Group Chief Executive of SGPB Hambros from 1998 until September 2007 with overall responsibility for the profitable development of the SG Hambros group of companies in London, Jersey, Guernsey, Gibraltar and the Bahamas.

He started his banking career in 1964 at Coutts where he held various positions both in Switzerland and in the UK.  He was appointed Head of Coutts Private Banking in 1990. He moved to Hambros Bank Limited in 1997 as head of private banking, becoming Group Chief Executive of SGPB Hambros following Société Générale’s acquisition of Hambros Bank in February 1998.

On 1st October 2007 Warwick became Chairman of SG Hambros Bank Limited. He continues to chair the boards of the SGPB Hambros offshore banks in the Channel Islands and Gibraltar. He is also Chairman of the SGPB Hambros Offshore Defined Benefits Pension schemes.

Warwick was awarded the Spear’s Private Banker of the Year (2007) and the Private Asset Managers Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. He is married with two children and enjoys shooting and opera.

Jean-Pierre Flais
Deputy Chief Executive Officer

Jean-Pierre has been working for the Société Générale Group since 1987 where he started his career at the Inspection Department based in Paris. He subsequently worked in the institutional investors relations area covering the UK, South East Asia and Australia. He then moved to London in 1997 as Finance Director for SG UK Investment Banking before joining SGPB Hambros as Chief Financial Officer in 1998.

His main role is to contribute, with the chief executive, to the definition of the bank's overall strategy, to ensure its implementation and to manage the day to day running of the business.

His direct areas of responsibility include investment management, finance, IT, operations, projects and central services, risk management and legal.

Jean-Pierre graduated from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales (French business school) where he studied in Paris, New York and Cologne.  He is married with three children.

Eric Barnett
Chief Executive Officer

Eric became SGPB Hambros Chief Executive in September 2007. Before this he was Group Head of Private Banking and Managing Director of the London office at SG Hambros. He is responsible for developing the Group’s commercial and marketing strategies and oversees the Group’s private banking activities as well as manages the day-to-day running of the London office.

Eric started his banking career in 1983 at NatWest in London as a graduate trainee. In 1986 he joined Hambros Bank Limited and undertook a variety of roles in investment banking and acquisition finance. He then moved to the Guernsey office in 1996 as Head of Private Banking, and continued in this role following Société Générale’s acquisition of Hambros Bank Limited in 1998 before moving back to London in 2000.

Eric has an MBA from the City University Business School in London. He is married with two children and has a keen interest in hill walking, photography and playing guitar.

Phil Mcilwraith
Group Commercial Director

Phil joined SGPB Hambros in 1990, initially in Jersey, where he performed various roles for SGPB Hambros, including Head of Private Banking and Head of Investment Management. He has been in London since 2004.  Phil is Group Commercial Director, responsible for teams of UK-based private bankers, product development and marketing & communications.  Other employers include Royal Bank of Canada and Lazard Brothers, mainly in capital markets roles.

Much of his current role involves meetings with clients, private bankers and other employees of SGPB Hambros (in UK and offshore) to ensure that the SGPB Hambros commercial offer provides the optimal solution for clients and introducers. It also involves liaison with other parts of Société Générale Private Banking. Growing the business successfully is dependant on finding the right people, and another important part of Phil's role is to interview and recruit new bankers, and also to develop existing talent by working closely with the HR and training functions. Outside interests include reading, running, football, golf, chess and meteorology. Qualifications include Bsc (Hons), ACIB, FSI. Phil is married with two children.
